The short answer
Choose WordPress if you'll publish lots of content yourself every week and want thousands of ready-made plugins. Choose Next.js if you care most about speed, security and a design that doesn't look like a theme.
Speed
Next.js sites are usually pre-built into static pages and served from a global network, so they load almost instantly. WordPress can be fast too, but it often needs caching plugins and careful hosting — and every extra plugin can slow it down.
Speed matters more than it sounds: slow pages lose visitors on mobile data and rank lower on Google.
Security and maintenance
WordPress is the most targeted platform on the web because it's so popular. Plugins need regular updates, and an abandoned plugin can become a security hole.
A Next.js site has no public admin login or database to attack by default, which removes most common risks.
Editing content
WordPress wins on built-in editing. With Next.js we connect a simple content editor when you need one, so you can still change text, images and blog posts without a developer.
Cost
WordPress can look cheaper at first, especially with a ready-made theme. Next.js hosting is often free or very cheap for business sites, and it usually needs less ongoing maintenance — so the total cost over two or three years tends to even out.
- ✦Pick WordPress: content-heavy sites, frequent self-publishing, plugin-dependent features
- ✦Pick Next.js: speed, security, custom design, apps and integrations
